The musical based on the film “The Bodyguard” is currently appearing at the Fisher Theatre for a two week engagement. The film was a box office hit in no small part because of Whitney Houston’s powerful vocals. The soundtrack from the movie remains the best selling album in its genre with 17 million copies sold worldwide.
The current tour features no less a dynamic voice than Ms. Houston’s. Deborah Cox plays Rachel Marron. Cox, singer, songwriter, and actress, provides powerful vocals and hits a high water mark with her performance of the show’s signature song, the Dolly Parton penned “I Will Always Love You”.
The show is by-and-large faithful to the movie. Bodyguard Frank Farmer is hired to protect singer/superstar Rachel Marron from a stalker who’s been sending her death threats. Judson Mills plays Farmer with the same quiet/stoic tough-guy persona that Kevin Kostner did. Mills possesses a square-jawed look of masculinity and bears a passing resemblance to Rifleman Chuck Connors.
The musical also features several high-powered dance numbers (Karen Bruce, choreographer) and a set pulsating with intense lighting effects (set and costume designs by Tim Hatley, lighting by Mark Henderson).
Others featured in the show include Jasmin Richardson as Nicki Marron, Alex Corrado as Tony Scibelli, Charles Gray as Bill Devaney, Jonathan Hadley as Sy Spector, Kevelin B. Jones III and Sebastian Maynard –Palmer alternating as Fletcher, and Jorge Paniagua as The Stalker. Music direction comes courtesy of Matthew Smedal.
For those who enjoyed the movie, there’s a lot to like about this stage production. The show is both exciting and glamorous. And Deborah Cox lets it be known that she’s as much of a superstar as the character she plays.
“The Bodyguard The Musical” is a Michael Harrison, David Ian and Nederlander Presentations Production. The show runs through January 28th.
